South Kensington Art Gallery – Interior Design for a Contemporary Exhibition Space
Polysmiths was appointed to design the interiors of this contemporary art gallery in South Kensington, London. The brief called for an understated yet distinctive spatial identity to accommodate exhibitions spanning sculpture, painting, photography, and multimedia installations.
We created a refined, neutral backdrop with carefully calibrated lighting and material finishes that subtly frame the artworks while enhancing the visitor experience. Clean geometry and a muted palette allow the space to transform with each show, ensuring curatorial flexibility.
This project reflects our ability to deliver gallery and exhibition interiors that are both architecturally precise and emotionally resonant.
Case study: Our recent gallery interiors project in South Kensington Listed Building
We have recently been commissioned by a private art gallery, with a focus on African painting and sculptures from Ghana and beyond, to work on the design ideas, interior designs, and construction delivery of their gallery space in South Kensington (London Borough of Kensington & Chelsea), housed in a Grade II Listed Building opposite Hyde Park.
The scope of the project includes renovation of all 3 gallery rooms, enhancing the existing Listed Building fabric, as well as renovation of a new office and meeting room for the gallery.
Focus on low-impact refurbishment with materials and texture
We worked with our Client to achieve a very simple design idea: apply tactile materials to declutter the existing interiors, providing a hierarchy of spaces for optimal viewing experience, and allowing the artwork to take center stage.
We listened carefully, and worked with our Clients to ensure that the art collections they currently have will fit perfectly within the new spaces we designed. This includes a wood carving ‘Venus’ sculpture taking center stage of an arched hallways space.
Planning approvals, Listed Building Consents, Costing and Construction
We are experienced in planning matters, as well as cost management. We are supportive with our clients, and provide adequate technical delivery to the builders for high-end construction delivery as a result of clear client briefing and listening.
