Polysmiths researches recycled plastic, paper and wood chip in 3D printing to create a cosmic capsule for the canine explorer.

Responding to the ‘Dogs in Space’ brief set out by Goodwoof, Polysmiths uses the opportunity to look into materials and 3d printing technique for the new dog kennel.

Our Ambition: “If NASA designed a dog bed, this would be it, a space capsule with a heartbeat.”

Every space explorer needs a sanctuary. The Pluto Pod is a protective capsule for our family whippet, Pluto - a curious, calm voyager ready for adventures from the Highlands to hyperspace.

3D-printed in basalt-reinforced PLA, its black shell feels meteor-forged yet feather-light. Inside, 140 recycled tennis balls, Pluto’s favourite toy, are hand-cut, foam-filled and dyed in Goodwoof Orange to form a tactile nest that comforts through scent and familiarity. The lid lifts for lounging or seals for travel: open bed, closed pod.

For Our Canine Client

Pluto the whippet is sensitive, streamlined and brave, built for speed, soothed by stillness. His pod balances adventure with security, offering the containment he craves after interstellar zoomies.

Green by Design

Recycled Tennis Balls: Intercepting waste before landfill (125 million discarded yearly in the UK). Basalt-Reinforced PLA: Bioplastic infused with quarrying waste for strength with a reduced carbon footprint. Modular Build: Repairable components extend lifespan beyond a single dog’s use.

High-Tech meets Handcraft

Shell Fabrication: The shell components will be digitally fabricated using industrial FDM 3D printing over 48 hours into a two-part construction (base + lid).
