Activating a Brownfield Site in Hackney into Sustainable, Community-Led Housing
Polysmiths partnered with a local Community Land Trust in Hackney to reimagine a disused brownfield site as a vibrant, high-density residential development. The project supported multi-generational living and prioritised sustainability, social cohesion, and urban regeneration.
The design combined the refurbishment of existing structures with renovation and construction of new homes. Central to the scheme were communal spaces, including shared gardens, courtyards, and kitchens, fostering connection and mutual support among residents.
This project demonstrated how thoughtful architecture could activate underutilised urban land, offering a replicable model for sustainable housing in dense city environments. It was not just about creating homes, it was about building lasting community.
